Joleon Lescott joins England Under-21 coaching team

England have moved to appoint Joleon Lescott to their Under-21 coaching team.

The former centre half, who won 26 caps for his country, links up with Lee Carsley’s management set-up ahead of Friday’s friendly with Romania.

Lescott left his position in Manchester City’s loans department at the end of last season but will continue his ambassadorial duties at the club.

‘I’m delighted to be able to add somebody of Joleon’s stature to my coaching team,’ Carsley said.

‘Having played with Joleon at Everton, I know exactly what his mentality was as a player and can now look forward to helping him prosper as a coach.’

Lescott, who has gained a UEFA A coaching licence, will work alongside assistant manager Ashley Cole and goalkeeping coach Tim Dittmer.

Carsley added: ‘He is another experienced head who will be able to give our players valuable insight into what it takes to represent your country at the highest level.’

Meanwhile, Aston Villa midfielder Jacob Ramsey has not joined up with England and is self-isolating.
