Joe Hart will leave Burnley at the end of June as club confirm his contract won’t be extended

Former England goalkeeper Joe Hart has been told his contract at Burnley won’t be extended beyond June 30.

Hart, 33, was informed on Saturday with manager Sean Dyche allowing the player to decide if he wants to be on the bench at his old club Manchester City on Monday.

The news leaves Hart a free agent with the rest of the summer to look for a new club.

A two-time Premier League champion with City who played 75 times for England, Hart’s career took a downturn after Pep Guardiola arrived at The Etihad in 2016 and he subsequently went on loan to Torino and West Ham.

Hart joined Burnley in 2018 but the form of Nick Pope restricted his opportunities this season and he has played only three cup games.

Burnley have four other out-of-contract players Phil Bardsley, Aaron Lennon, Jeff Hendrick and Adam Ledgzins set to leave at the end of the month.

Club chairman Mike Garlick spoke out at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic of the challenges clubs like Burnley faced though deciding to resume the season has helped their finances.

Though some Premier League clubs have offered out-of-contract players a short extension to finish the season, Burnley aren’t in relegation trouble and players looking for a new club may not want to take the risk of getting injured.
