Jerry Jones makes ludicrous claim about Eagles when defending Cowboys

As Jerry Jones tells it, the reason the Cowboys haven’t won a Super Bowl in nearly 30 years is that Jones is concerned about the big picture.

Per Pro Football Talk, Jones described the past two NFC participants in the Super Bowl — Los Angeles and Philadelphia — as teams that “bet it all” for a chance to win a title.

As PFT notes, that’s an inaccurate way of viewing the Eagles’ roster construction. While the organization made several moves to bolster its odds of winning a title this season, Philadelphia has two first-round picks in the upcoming draft and a QB on a rookie contract.

Even more ludicrous is Jones suggesting there’s a long-term plan that justifies the Cowboys not making a bigger push to end a 27-year Super Bowl drought.

Last offseason, for example, Dallas traded Amari Cooper to the Browns two years after signing agreeing to a five-year, $100 million contract because Jones wanted to spend the money elsewhere, namely resigning free agents including fellow wide receiver Michael Gallup at a lower cost.

Cooper had 78 receptions, 1,160 yards and nine touchdowns this season. Gallup missed three games but his per-game averages paled in comparison to what Cooper averaged. Gallup finished the season with 39 receptions, 424 yards and four touchdowns.

Jones pointed to the Rams’ struggles this season as a reason a team shouldn’t go all-in on a Super Bowl. If Super Bowl LVI ended differently, Los Angeles’s decision to trade numerous first-round picks would look a lot worse. But the Rams won the Super Bowl while the Cowboys only know how to run the worst possible plays to end a season. One team looks bad, and it isn’t the Rams.

Dallas is traditionally hesitant to trade its first-round picks for players. It has done so just three times with Jerry Jones as owner, none of which worked out well.

The team traded two first-round picks to Seattle for wide receiver Joey Galloway in 1999 and then acquired wide receiver Roy Williams from Detroit in 2008. The final time was when they traded with the Raiders for Cooper in 2018.

“I’m real hesitant to bet it all for a year,” Jones said. “There’s a lot of things that can happen for that year.”

Until the Cowboys bet big, winning a Super Bowl isn’t one of them.
