Jerome Boateng ‘attracts interest from Chelsea and Arsenal’

Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng could leave the club this summer and spark a bidding war between Chelsea and Arsenal.

The 32-year-old is set to enter the final 12 months of his contract at Bayern and his future appears uncertain with a new deal still to be agreed.

Boateng’s relationship with Bayern has soured after he was fined by the club for breaking coronavirus guidelines regarding essential travel.

The defender has claimed he was travelling to Leipzig to see his sick son, but Bayern still enforced the fine and that could push him further towards the exit door.

Boateng was also embroiled in a heated on pitch confrontation with Bayern team-mate Joshua Kimmich before being hauled off at half-time during December’s clash with Werder Bremen.

According to FootMercato, Arsenal and Chelsea are both keen to sign an experienced centre-back this summer, with Boateng a potential option for both teams.

The Gunners reportedly attempted to sign Boateng in the January transfer window but were unsuccessful, though they could revive their interest this summer.

Chelsea, meanwhile, have blooded several young defenders but believe an experienced head could aid the development of their academy graduates.

Boateng would fit that criteria but the Blues have previously been unwilling to offer players over the age of 30 more than two year deals, which could prove to be a stumbling block.

The Germany international joined Bayern in 2011 after a single season at Manchester City and has gone on to make 310 appearances and score eight goals for the club.

During his time at Bayern, Boateng has lifted the Bundesliga title seven times, while he also won the 2014 World Cup  with Germany.
