Javier Zanetti explains why Inter Milan didn’t sign Lionel Messi
Lionel Messi joins PSG
Lionel Messi would join PSG over the summer, departing long-time club FC Barcelona in the biggest transfer story of the year.
With the Argentine reuniting with Neymar, as well as golden boy Kylian Mbappe, there was an expectation that PSG would go on to dominate both domestically and in Europe this campaign.
However, that has not really proven the case so far. The capital giants do have a healthy lead atop Ligue 1, but Messi has scored just once in 10 games, whilst also providing five assists.
In the Champions League, meanwhile, Messi scored five in five, but PSG still only finished second in their group behind Manchester City.
Why Messi didn’t join Inter Milan
Before his switch to Paris, Lionel Messi would be linked with a number of clubs, one of which was Inter Milan.
That, move, of course, would not happen, but it would have no doubt been interesting to see Messi in Italy.
Now though, current Inter Milan vice-president Javier Zanetti has recently spoken out about why Inter did not sign the Argentine.
And, not too surprisingly, it looked to boil down to financial issues:
“Nobody thought that Leo could leave Barça.
“When the opportunity arose we were in the midst of a pandemic, and the truth is that you could not afford such a large and important investment because it was putting the future of the club at risk,” said Pupi and gave some more details on how Inter works.
“As values and principles we understand that everything must be related and based on a strategy, and we have been implementing it on and off the field, ensuring that the objectives are met both on and off the field.”
