Jannik Vestergaard is training alone after being asked to stay away from the Leicester first-team squad following an interview in which he was critical of boss Brendan Rodgers.

The Denmark defender, who has not started a league game since January 2022, has long been out of favour with Rodgers and has made only three appearances this season.

Now it is thought Vestergaard is working with a fitness coach on a separate pitch from his colleagues.

Vestergaard’s interview with Danish newspaper EkstraBladet was published on March 1

The 30-year-old said it was ‘strange’ that he had not been considered for first-team selection all season. Now Vestergaard’s future with Leicester appears sealed.

Vestergaard joined from Southampton in summer 2021 but has been surplus to requirements since the end of last season.

Fulham were ready to meet Leicester’s asking price of about £16million in the summer but the player was reluctant to move to a newly-promoted club, while Leicester were unsure about allowing him to move elsewhere on a straight loan.

Vestergaard could then have joined Hertha Berlin or Monaco during the January window but chose to stay put as his partner was heavily pregnant and advised by doctors not to travel.

He has a contract at King Power Stadium until the end of next season.

It remains to be seen whether the situation will change in the coming weeks.

‘I really felt wanted by Brendan Rodgers,’ Vestergaard told Danish publication EkstraBladet.

‘While I was at Southampton, he really convinced me that I should switch to Leicester.

‘I was already very close to switching from Southampton to Leicester, a year and a half before it became a reality.

‘So Brendan Rodgers and the club knew exactly which player they were buying with both my strengths and weaknesses, and it’s hard to understand that from one moment to the next I’m suddenly unusable.

‘It feels strange, I must admit.’

Leicester did not comment when approached by Sportsmail.
