Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer plans to draft best player over biggest need

Perhaps the greatest philosophical divide when it comes to drafting is whether you should try to select a player based on your team’s need or simply take the best player available. Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer says it’s a debate he’s been having internally as he approaches his first draft but ultimately, he believes that going with the best player is the smartest way to guarantee success.

“I find myself always looking at need and that’s where you have to be cautious, you start chasing players,” Meyer said, per the team’s official website. “So, trusting the board is key.”

Fortunately for Meyer and the Jags, there won’t be much issue with their first pick, as the team has been firmly linked to former Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence since they secured the no. 1 pick. However, after that, all bets are off and Jacksonville is certainly a team that could use talent on almost every part of the roster.

Meyer said that prepping for the draft has been “a great learning experience” for him but admitted that he remains nervous about it. Those nerves are understandable, as he could be setting the Jaguars up for years of success or failure based on these picks.
