Jaguars Continue Turnover At A Key Position
Pro Football Focus writer Ari Meirov tweeted, “The #Jaguars waived kicker Matthew Wright, who was 25/28 on FGs last year including making 4 kicks from 50+.”
Missing three field goals might not be a good look, but it’s an impressive record compared to other kickers.
Wright also demonstrated range by converting four kicks of over 50 yards.
The Jaguars would benefit from retaining him, but they have other plans.
Did they change kickers because of the mentality that they’d score more touchdowns this season?
Wright is a decent option that can convert clutch kicks.
But they’re changing kickers and their decision is final.
Who Are The Jaguars Bringing In?
Jacksonville’s depth chart shows that Ryan Santoso will be their top kicker with Andrew Mevis as the backup.
Last season, Santoso converted 80 percent of his field goals which is a lower mark than Wright’s 89.2 percent clip.
He also drilled in 75 percent of his point-after attempts and has his longest conversion from 35 yards.
These numbers are not enticing, especially with his predecessor having better stats.
It’s uncertain what the Jaguars are thinking by making the shift to a less-dependable option.
Every point counts for them, especially in the AFC South.
Therefore, they are better off with the kicker that can constantly put points on the board.
Otherwise, their rebuild this season will falter.
