Jaguars’ Andrew Wingard blasts Urban Meyer during praise of Trevor Lawrence

Jacksonville Jaguars safety Andrew Wingard talked candidly about the growth of second-year quarterback Trevor Lawrence following the team’s Week 12 win over the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, bashing former head coach Urban Meyer in the process.

Wingard clearly still isn’t over the turmoil that Meyer brought to Jacksonville during his 11-month tenure at the helm in 2021. The former Florida and Ohio State football coaching legend was hired as the Jaguars head coach in January 2021 and was engulfed in scandal after scandal, before being fired in December of last year.

In October 2021, a viral video that showed a young woman dancing suggestively against Meyer’s leg at an Ohio bar was released. This came days after it was learned that Meyer didn’t fly home with his team from Cincinnati following a loss to the Bengals.

In December, one day before Meyer was let go, former kicker Josh Lambo came forward with an allegation that the coach not only bulled him but kicked him during a practice earlier in the season.

The 2021 first overall pick out of Clemson, Lawrence had an up-and-down rookie season by posting a 59.6% completion percentage with 3,641 passing yards, 12 touchdowns, and a league-leading 17 interceptions, while adding 73 carries for 334 yards and two scores on the ground. Through 11 games this season, the 23-year-old has registered a 66.5% completion percentage with 2,655 passing yards, 16 touchdowns, and six interceptions, while posting 39 rushing attempts for 179 yards and three scores as well.

Lawrence is coming off arguably his best passing performance of the campaign in the win against the Ravens, as he finished 29-for-37 with a season-high 321 passing yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions. Still with six regular season games remaining, the Jaguars have already surpassed last year’s win total of three with their current record of 4-7.
