Fans have questioned Gareth Southgate‘s decision to leave Ivan Toney at home for the World Cup after the Brentford striker netted a dramatic brace in his side’s win over Manchester City.

Despite registering eight goals in 13 Premier League games before taking his tally into double figures at the Etihad, Toney failed to make it into England’s 26-man squad for the major tournament in Qatar.

Alongside England talisman Harry Kane, Southgate preferred Marcus Rashford and Callum Wilson over the in-form Toney as the strikers that will board the plane to the Middle East.

Though missing out on a chance to make his England bow at a major tournament will have undoubtedly been a disappointment for the 26-year-old, Toney responded superbly at the Etihad.

The former Peterborough star opened the scoring after just 16 minutes when he forced his header past Ederson to give the visitors an unexpected early lead.

City hit back through Phil Foden, but Brentford would leave with the three points when Toney put himself in the right place at the right time to claim the winner eight minutes into injury time.
