Ilkay Gundogan has admitted he could leave Manchester City this summer due to limited playing time in ‘important games’.

As reported by Sportsmail earlier this monthPep Guardiola‘s first signing has been told he is free to find another club with one year remaining on his contract at the Etihad Stadium.

Gundogan featured heavily this season, starting 20 Premier League matches out of 38 in a squad packed with midfield options.

The 31-year-old has revealed he’s undecided on his future and will have a ‘sit down together’ with the club ‘in due course’.

Speaking to Kicker via Sportwitness, he said: ‘We will sit down together in due course and exchange our ideas and plans, and then we will see what comes out of it.

‘Football-wise, there is certainly still no better address than Manchester City under Pep Guardiola, and I think that will hardly change in the next few years.

‘Of course, I would have liked to play a little longer in one or two important games over the last few months. That’s not a secret. I am a player who always wants to play.’

It is understood that it has been communicated to the player that an extension to his existing deal is unlikely. And, given Gundogan’s service, he has been given the opportunity to explore options elsewhere with 12 months remaining on his deal.

Gundogan was the hero on the last day of the season as his brace helped City come from behind to beat Aston Villa and pip Liverpool to the Premier League title by one point.

He has been in Manchester for six years. He is a key statesman in the squad, one of five vice captains, and acted as Fernandinho’s vice-skipper.

Since joining from Borussia Dortmund, Gundogan has scored 49 goals and provided 33 assists in 253 appearances across all competitions.

He has also become the most decorated German footballer to play in England, having won the Premier League and League Cup on four occasions as well as the FA Cup three years ago.
