IDEA assistant principal arrested in San Antonio for allegedly assaulting 5-year-old

Sheriff Javier Salazar said at a Thursday press conference that Tara Coleman Hunter, 53, was arrested for assault causing bodily injury to a child after the 5-year-old boy’s mother brought evidence to the sheriff’s office this week

The mother alleges that Hunter, an assistant principal at IDEA Amber Creek, pushed the 5-year-old student into a filing cabinet on April 22 after he hit her. The student allegedly sustained a knot on his head from the push. His injuries were documented by the school nurse.

Salazar says Hunter was arrested at her home in the Potranco and Loop 1604 area. Her bond was not set as of Thursday evening.

Salazar says that the child became unruly in the classroom and was sent to Hunter’s office. He said both the mom and the student acknowledged that he hit Hunter.

“But it’s a 5-year-old and my understanding is that this is just an average-sized 5-year-old, certainly nothing that an assistant principal shouldn’t be able to handle,” Salazar says.

Salazar says he doesn’t believe she had any priors and is not sure if IDEA had any issues that came up in her background check. He says investigators are still gathering background information.
