In their new installment of the ‘Once a Year’ series, Nike revealed a new side of the Spurs rookie.

On December 20th, 2023, Nike unveiled their latest series, “Victor Wembanyama: Once a Year Interview (year 1).” The simplicity of its production is striking: the camera opens with a panoramic shot of the set, framing Wembanyama seated against a blue backdrop. The deliberate simplicity serves as a canvas for a profound, in-depth conversation with the rookie.

As expected, the initial segment opens with a somewhat conventional answer from Wembanyama. He recounts his encounter with Nike founder Phil Knight last year, seamlessly integrating product placements featuring the Nike NOCTA Glide shoe, which he sported while throwing the opening pitch at Yankee Stadium last summer.

However, the interview takes an intriguing turn as it progresses. The fourth question, “What’s a guiding motto that defines your approach to life?” prompts a deeper response. Wembanyama deliberates on the intricacy of the question but eventually settles on this: “Be Unique Every Day.” It resonates powerfully, reflecting Victor’s unmistakably unconventional approach to life. It wouldn’t be surprising if Nike introduced T-shirts featuring this tagline by the new year.

The following questions delve even deeper into Wembanyama’s psyche, exploring his thoughts beyond the basketball court. He shares the contemplation of his past, present, and future selves. Reflecting on how his younger self would perceive him now and aspiring to make his future self proud, Victor showcases a profound understanding of himself. It provides him with clarity, guiding his actions toward his envisioned future.

Wembanyama’s candid responses offered a genuine glimpse into his true self, and Nike executed brilliantly by creating the perfect platform for such an authentic conversation. The prospect of this yearly interview series has me very excited.

Victor appears poised and ready for tonight’s game. Could we anticipate another 20/20 performance against the Chicago Bulls?

Wembanyama, a 19-year-old, is already a global superstar.

Being in the same league as Shaq is never a bad thing.

Wemby is back in the pole position, and on track to secure the Rookie of the Month award for December.
