Holly Rowe’s interview with Thunder’s Jaylin and Jalen Williams takes unfortunate turn

That was awkward.

After the Thunder’s 95-85 win over the Utah Jazz in the Salt Lake City Summer League on Monday, ESPN reporter Holly Rowe conducted a group postgame interview that included Thunder forwards Jaylin Williams and Jalen Williams.

Rowe made it perfectly clear that she believed the latter was the better Williams that night.

“We dubbed you THE Jalen Williams tonight,” before looking at Jaylin and saying “No offense, young man.”

It may have been too late for that qualifier.

In the video, Jaylin Williams laughed off the comment, while guard Tre Mann gave a look of confusion that said, “did she really just say that?”

Forward Chet Holmgren had a similar look of shock as well.

In Rowe’s defense, she wasn’t the person who came up with the nickname.

Game analyst Thurl Bailey used “the” to differentiate between Jaylin Williams, who goes by Jay Will, and Jalen Williams, who is known as J-Dub.

Jaylin and Jalen are also not alone.

The Thunder also have undrafted rookie KJ Williams on their Summer League roster and Kenrich Williams on the regular roster, so making sure there is a clear delineation between who is who can get a little messy.

But there were better ways to do that in a live interview, especially considering Jaylin Williams had a solid night with eight points and 13 rebounds.

Jalen Williams, the forward out of Santa Clara, picked up from where he left off during his productive rookie campaign with 21 points, four rebounds and two assists, and thus getting “the” added to his name.

NBA Twitter also chimed in on this awkward exchange, including one user who called the nickname “terrible.”
