Hemisfair recently shared a virtual hard hat tour of the construction at Civic Park, showcasing a couple of features and amenities that San Antonio will get to experience this fall when the park opens to the public.

Hemisfair broke ground on the park project in January 2022 to convert a five-acre portion of the historic 1968 World’s Fair site into an event space that will fit up to 15,000 people and revamp areas near the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, including the promenade, great lawn, and shallow, which will use treated nuisance water under the convention center for water features as well as irrigation.

The video says one of the water features that will feed water to the springs will represent the Acequia Madre de Valero, an irrigation canal that was built by the Spanish in 1719 to serve the Alamo, one year after San Antonio was founded. The numerous acequia diverted water from San Antonio River over 50 miles of canals to agricultural fields that served San Antonio missions.

A water feature named The Springs is featured in the video and described as an interactive water feature designed for people of all ages to wade or relax near the water. The nuisance water used in interactive water features will be treated to be swimming pool-quality water. There will also be accessible amenities at the park, including restrooms that have adult changing tables.

We learned in December 2022 that 200 trees will be planted to spruce up the planned promenade, great lawn and green space, including a 20-year-old oak tree has already moved to the Alamo City. Other planned projects for the Hemisfair area includes a new 17-story hotel tower that will overlook Civic Park, a 28-story mixed-use tower, and a boutique hotel that should open in 2024.
