Hector Bellerin pledges to plant 3,000 trees for every Arsenal win between now and the end of season

Hector Bellerin has partnered with global charity One Tree Planted, in which he has pledged for 3,000 trees to be planted for every victory Arsenal amass between now and the end of the campaign.

Bellerin has been gearing up for the Premier League‘s long-awaited restart amid the coronavirus pandemic but during the off-break, the Spaniard has been doing plenty of work off the pitch.

The Gunners restart their Premier League campaign against Manchester City away on Wednesday night, and have 10 matches to try and usurp their rivals in the race for a Champions League spot.

But any victory has now picked up extra significance after Bellerin committed to plant 3,000 trees every time Arsenal enjoy success on the pitch before the league season’s out.

‘As a child growing up in Barcelona, I spent a lot of my time with my grandad in his garden planting trees and playing in forests so it’s an issue very close to my heart,’ Bellerin told One Tree Planted’s website.

‘When I saw the great work that One Tree Planted do, not just the planting of the trees but within the communities as well, I knew it was something that I wanted to get involved in.

‘I hope that by doing this and using my platform, others will see how important it is to look after our world and donate to a cause which really affects us all.’

Bellerin’s partnership with One Tree Planted is just the latest in a long line of work that the Spanish right back has done to look after the environment.

A recent study has shown that 4,500 acres of forests are cleared every hour, which has led to hugely negative effects on wildlife, ecosystems and weather patterns.

The project will involve trees being planted in the Amazon Rainforest, in a bid to support the vital ecosystems and the local people who help conservation and restoration.

Canopy Director of One Tree Planted, Diana Chaplin, added: ‘It’s great to know that there are champions for the environment in the sports world. Hector’s passion for nature goes beyond words to make a real impact on the ground and help us plant trees where they’re needed most.

‘This will have a lasting benefit for people, nature, and wildlife for many years to come.’

Bellerin will be desperate for victory over City at the Etihad, to get both Arsenal’s Champions League hunt and his eco-friendly plan well on the road.
