Harry Souttar suffered every defender’s worst nightmare after putting the ball in his own net on his Premier League debut for new club Leicester City.

Souttar was handed a start by Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers just four days after joining the east Midlands club from Stoke City in a £15million deadline day deal, tasked with shoring up the team’s leaky defence.

However, it took just nine minutes for opponents Aston Villa to break the deadlock, with Ollie Watkins finding the back of the net past Danny Ward.

The Foxes levelled just three minutes later through James Maddison, but Souttar was left red-faced just after the half-hour mark when he had the final touch before the ball hit his own net.

Defending a cross from Watkins on the left hand side, the ball struck the Australian before flying past Ward.

In a back-and-forth contest, former Manchester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho scored past Emiliano Martinez before Tete put the visitors in front just prior to the half time whistle.

Souttar provided clear evidence of the quality that convinced Leicester to pay a record fee for an Australian footballer in the second half, though, shoring things up at the back as Denis Praet added a fourth goal to help clinch a crucial three points.

Rodgers lavished praise on his new man earlier this week, revealing that he has already made an instant impact.

‘[I am] Delighted,’ he said. ‘I’ve seen Harry as a younger player and obviously seeing the trauma of coming through a bad injury, and seeing his performances at Stoke and the World Cup.

‘I also spoke to a number of people really respect in the game who spoke so highly of him, and I can see why having met him and spoke with him.’

Rodgers added that despite entering new surroundings, Souttar has already hit the ground running at Leicester and has impressed his teammates.

‘So he’s a young player on the way up, he has done very well in the Championship. I saw him a lot in Scotland as a young player and he is going to come in to show his quality in the Premier League and he gives us that stature that we are looking for but as you have seen in the World Cup, he can play football as well.

‘We are delighted to have Harry in and just in his first few days he has made a really good impact already.’
