Harry Maguire insists Man Utd ‘expect to win trophies’ and must go on to win the Carabao Cup

Harry Maguire has insisted Manchester United must go on to lift the Carabao Cup as ‘winning trophies is what’s expected’ from them after reaching the semi-final with victory over Everton.

Ole Gunnar Solskjer’s men will take on their arch-rivals City in the last four after overcoming Everton at Goodison Park on Wednesday night.

Late goals from Edinson Cavani – who contentiously escaped a red card earlier in the game for grabbing Yerry Mina by the throat – and Anthony Martial sent United through.

United are now only two victories away from lifting the Carabao Cup but Maguire stressed their achievement will be futile if they don’t now go on to win the competition.

After Wednesday’s victory, the United skipper said: ‘When you play for Manchester United you expect to win trophies, this year we reached our first semi-final in our first competition, but now it’s about winning the big games and lifting trophies for this club.

‘It’s always a tough place to come and there were fans in the stadium that added a bit of atmosphere.

‘We fully deserved the win in the end and glad it didn’t go to penalties.

‘It was an excellent performance, we started the game really well.

‘We should have been leading after 20 minutes, we probably should have been out of sight, we had three or four great chances and we’ve got to be a little bit more clinical but we kept going and we kept digging in.’

Maguire reserved praise for goalscorer Cavani, who was fortunate to still be on the pitch after clashing with Everton defender Mina in the early stages of the second half.

The England international added: ‘I always felt like we would get another chance and Edinson (Cavani) put a great finish in and we are through to the next round which is the most important thing.

‘It was excellent on his weak foot, we know he does that week in and week out in training.

‘He’s obviously had a little injury which has kept him out from the previous games so it’s good to have him back, it’s good to have him around the place.

it’s good to have him back. He’s a top striker and you can see what he’s about so he’s great to have around the place.’
