Aston Villa and England goalkeeper Hannah Hampton has released a statement after being dropped by club and country over ‘attitude’ issues – claiming she is currently suffering from a medical problem.

Hampton was left out of Aston Villa’s squad for their visit to Chelsea over the weekend, with manager Carla Ward instructing the player to stay at home after ‘something happened yesterday’ – saying it was ‘in the best interests of the team’.

Lionesses boss Sarina Wiegman, meanwhile, refused to comment on the goalkeeper’s situation on Tuesday but revealed she had not spoken to her in the last two months and that she still needed to resolve the issues that had been the reason for her absence in September.

Now Hampton has clarified the situation on social media, writing: ‘I’ve been suffering with an ongoing medical issue for a while and it’s time to address it properly this week with a small procedure.

‘I’ll be out for a few weeks now as I recover with the support of everyone at the club. My priority now is to return to fitness, get back on the pitch and give my all for the team. UTV!’

The statement ends Hampton’s silence over the speculation surrounding her attitude but does little to clarify exactly how or why the situation has developed.

Earlier on Tuesday, Wiegman left the door ajar for a potential return to the Lionesses squad after news she had been dropped by the national team.

‘I haven’t spoken to her myself, we have made a plan, she’s at club, she’s taking care of that,’ Wiegman said. ‘We are supporting and that’s where we are right now.

‘It’s the same reason as I said in September, nothing changed. That’s basically what it is.

‘She still has to [sort things out], it’s something personal I would not like to comment on further.’

Meanwhile, Wiegman was also asked about Steph Houghton’s situation as she continues to be left out by the Dutchwoman.

Wiegman still thinks Houghton has work to do to force her way back into the squad.

‘I had a conversation with her. I think now she’s not ready to compete or ready for us in the squad which obviously she wants,’ Wiegman said.

‘She really needs minutes too, to show and get consistency. We’ll see how it goes. I can’t look into the future, I think at the moment it’s really hard with having the team now, the players she’s competing with and also now, as you’ve seen, we have young players coming in and doing really well too. That is at this moment the situation for her.’
