Giants claim RB Ryquell Armstead off waivers from Jaguars

Former Jacksonville Jaguars running back Ryquell Armstead didn’t remain available for long and will have an opportunity to revive his NFL career with an NFC East club.

The New York Giants confirmed Tuesday they’ve claimed the 2019 fifth-round draft selection off waivers from the Jaguars. In a corresponding roster move, Big Blue released quarterback Joe Webb, who appeared in two games during the 2020 season on special teams.

Armstead rushed for 108 yards on 35 carries and caught 14 passes for 144 yards and two touchdowns his rookie year but missed the entire 2020 campaign due to complications caused by COVID-19. Per reports, the 24-year-old was hospitalized twice during the fall and dealt with “significant respiratory issues.”

Jacksonville waived Armstead on Monday.

The Giants recently signed veteran Corey Clement and have Devontae Booker on the roster to compete for touches with Armstead as star ball-carrier Saquon Barkley continues his return from the torn ACL he suffered in September.

Art Stapleton of NorthJersey.com noted Armstead could be used to lighten Barkley’s load through the end of the preseason:
