Former NFL, XFL quarterback to attend 49ers rookie minicamp

The San Francisco 49ers had a predicament on their hands for the end of the upcoming week. The team will hold its rookie minicamp on Friday, May 12, and Saturday, May 13. The issue was that the Niners didn’t have an eligible quarterback to throw during the practices.

San Francisco has four quarterbacks on its roster—Brock Purdy, Trey Lance, Sam Darnold, and soon-to-be-signed Brandon Allen. Unfortunately, none of them are eligible to participate during the rookie minicamp.

The 49ers didn’t draft a quarterback, nor did they sign an undrafted free-agent quarterback. The team had hoped to sign one in the days after the draft but was unsuccessful. Instead, they agreed to terms with Allen, who has been in the league since 2016.

According to Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle, the Niners solved their problem. Steven Montez will take part in the 49ers’ rookie minicamp. He spent time with the Washington Commanders and Detroit Lions and is currently on the Seattle Sea Dragon’s roster, an XFL team.
