Former 49ers Make Harsh Statements About the Team

Following the San Francisco 49ers win against the New Orleans Saints, there were reports that two former 49ers players made some harsh statements about the team. San Francisco is set to play the Miami Dolphins this Sunday. Miami’s head coach, Mike McDaniel was previously the 49ers offensive coordinator. Former 49ers runningbacks, Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson Jr made interesting remarks about San Francisco’s offense, specifically against their quarterback.

Former 49ers Statements:

The former 49ers running back, Raheem Mostert did not play in the 2021 season due to an injury. In a recent interview with Mostert and Wilson, Mostert discussed his frustrations with the team. The runningback said he felt as though the team was trying to rush him back, despite needing season-ending surgery. It was a tough decision to get the surgery, rather than try to let it heal on its own and risk a more serious injury. Mostert received a lot of unwarranted hate from the 49ers faithful, which was not right in any way.

According to Tyler Dunne, the writer who spoke to the running backs, Mostert said the team attempted to rush him back from his injury. Mostert was set to be a free agent in 2022 and said he felt his decision to get the offseason surgery was a factor in the 49ers not offering him a bigger contract, leading him to sign with the Miami Dolphins instead.

San Francisco’s head coach, Kyle Shanahan responded to the statements by the former 49ers player on Monday. Shanahan simply said there is a difference of opinions on the comments made. For the full quote, here is a tweet by Jake Hutchinson, a 49ers beat writer.

That was not all that was said by the former 49ers runningbacks. What truly stirred the pot was the comments made comparing the two offenses. According to a tweet by Dunne, the running backs said the Dolphins’ offense has “way better talent” and “a quarterback that can actually sling it.”

These were the quotes that Dunne chose to tweet out, which caused the current 49ers players to be upset.

San Francisco’s Reaction to Former 49ers

The statements made about the offense caused a strong reaction from the current team. 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel called out Mostert in a tweet, that can be read here . On top of that, defensive lineman, Charles Omenihu also posted a tweet about the comments made by the former 49ers players.

Mostert did eventually respond on Monday after the statements were blown up throughout the media. The running back claimed it was just a quote pulled out of a much larger context.

It is clear Mostert was not happy with what Dunne tweeted out. Within the full article, there was praise for the 49ers quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo, while also being more than happy with his current quarterback.

Former 49ers Statements: Big Deal?

This situation does come off as more clickbait as opposed to true anger towards anyone on the team. The more interesting aspect is the statements made about the 49ers rushing Mostert back from injury. This team is no stranger to injuries, and rushing players back can do more harm than good at times. Whether these statements are true or false, there will be no way of knowing for sure.

While these statements were just a portion of the article, it will be something to watch for if the comments lit a fire under the 49ers team. The 49ers defense has not allowed an opponent to score in the second half of the game in four straight weeks. They even held the Saints scoreless last weekend. It will be interesting to see how the team reacts after the comments that were made.

The 49ers will face the Dolphins this Sunday in hopes to continue their win streak and become one step closer to playoffs.
