Fans on De Gea: A legend is leaving us
The Spanish goalkeeper has formed a strong bond with the club’s followers during his 12 years as our no.1, and not just with the many thousands of match-goers for whom he is the closest player on the pitch, physically, when he’s between the posts in front of one stand or another.
De Gea has thrilled us countless times during his 545 competitive appearances for United, somehow diverting a shot or header that, to the fans sitting behind him, seemed destined for the top corner of the net.
And of course, he’s played a key role in the Reds winning five major trophies since 2011 – the Premier League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup (twice) and Europa League. So it’s little wonder there has been such an outpouring of emotion from supporters on social media.
