FanDuel Asked: Baker Mayfield Or Derek Carr, Take Your Pick?
FanDuel’s podcast, “Unsportsmanlike Conduct,” posed the question regarding two NFL quarterbacks, both of whom have had different career trajectories. First is the Las Vegas Raiders signal-caller and three-time Pro Bowler, Derek Carr. The second is Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield, who finds himself in limbo at the moment.
Derek Carr or Baker Mayfield? Is that even a real question?
It’s the offseason, so naturally football fans need something to talk about, something to rile them up even. You can bet that Raiders fans were quick to react to FanDuel’s question. That’s especially true when you consider that the Browns traded for a quarterback that hadn’t played since 2020 in Deshaun Watson, leaving Mayfield in no man’s land. On the contrary, Carr just finished leading the Raiders to their first playoff appearance since 2016.
When you look at them from a Raiders fan’s point of view, the comparison just doesn’t make sense. These two NFL quarterbacks aren’t even on the same level, tier, discussion, however you want to put it. To be fair, though, Mayfield had his 2021 season derailed by COVID-19 and injuries. Even though he played through it and showed how tough he was by doing so, the Browns looked for an upgrade this offseason.
As for Carr, he just led the Silver and Black through one of the most turbulent seasons in their history. Carr assisted the Raiders in overcoming a tragedy, injuries, and a scandal involving Jon Gruden. By doing so, Carr proved once again to be the locker room’s leader, and let’s not forget the coaching carousel that’s also defined much of Carr’s tenure.
For now, Mayfield will hopefully get another shot at leading an NFL team, but Carr is far and away the better pick at the moment.
