False alarm: Call from agent made 49ers’ Brandon Aiyuk nervous

A veteran NFL player receiving a call from his agent could be a cause for concern. However, one such instance this morning was just an agent checking in on his client.

Brandon Aiyuk shared that his agent called him early this morning, making the wide receiver wonder if the San Francisco 49ers had done something unexpected ahead of the second day of the 2023 NFL Draft. It turns out, it was just his agent calling to chat.

Whew.

“I thought I was up outta [there] I was gone head to the facility and start kicking doors down!!!!” Aiyuk shared via Twitter.

Aiyuk is entering his fourth NFL season, and the 49ers will likely use the fifth-year option on the talented wideout, keeping him in the Bay Area through the 2024 season. The team hopes to get a contract extension done with Aiyuk, keeping him around even longer.

There has been speculation that the 49ers might consider trading Aiyuk should the team feel it can’t get a deal done. However, on Monday, general manager John Lynch seemingly debunked those rumors.

“We’re trying to do something special this year, and Brandon is going to be a big part of that and beyond as well,” Lynch said. “And so, yes, you always have to think out a few years, but we’re really excited about Brandon, feel like he made another big step [last] year, and I think the best is yet to come, and so we want him being a part of it.

“And at some point, yeah, you have to figure things out, and I guess we’ll take that as it comes. But as of right now and into the future, we’re really excited about Brandon Ayuk and where he’s at as a pro, the work he’s done to develop as a pro and become one of our core players here.”

San Francisco drafted Aiyuk (6-0, 200) out of Arizona State with the No. 25 overall pick in 2020. He registered 78 receptions for 1,015 yards and eight touchdowns, all career highs, through 17 starts with the 49ers last season, per Pro Football Reference.
