FA will APPEAL lenient Jurgen Klopp punishment of £30,000 fine for furious touchline rant at official last month, after ref group were left ‘dumbstruck’ by decision not to give Liverpool boss touchline ban

  • The FA has appealed the decision to fine Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp
  • Klopp was fined £30,000 for his antics in the Reds’ win over Manchester City
  • The organisation are understood to feel the sanction imposed was too lenient
  • An ‘Enough Is Enough’ campaign has been launched to remove abuse in football

The Football Association have taken the rare step of appealing a decision in an attempt for Jurgen Klopp to receive a stronger punishment for his red card against Manchester City.

Liverpool’s manager was sent off in the 86th minute of his side’s 1-0 win on October 16 for confronting assistant referee Gary Beswick. Klopp admitted to ‘losing it’ but insisted he had not sworn at Beswick and he received a £30,000 fine following an investigation by an Independent Regulatory Committee.

However, both the FA and Klopp had scope to appeal the punishment after receiving the written reasons of the hearing and that is what the FA have chosen to do.

They do not believe the fine is sufficient for an incident for which Klopp received widespread criticism and, if their appeal is successful, the German could yet face a touchline ban.

In a statement on Friday night, they said: ‘The FA can confirm that it is appealing against the independent Regulatory Commission’s sanction in relation to the recent case involving Jurgen Klopp after reviewing its written reasons.

‘The independent Regulatory Commission fined Jurgen Klopp £30,000 for breaching FA Rule E3 during Liverpool FC’s Premier League game on Sunday 16 October 2022 against Manchester City FC.’

It is understood the FA feels elite-level managers have an example to set to the grassroots game in terms of what is acceptable behaviour.

Asked the day after the fine whether he felt it was a fair punishment, Klopp responded: ‘Should I have got a ban? I don’t know.

‘I never was in the situation, I never had a red card, I didn’t ever have a yellow card as far as I know.

‘I’m the wrong person that you should ask. I have no idea about what the usual things are. I had a touchline ban years ago in the Champions League with (Borussia) Dortmund, very similar situation, but obviously the Champions League is slightly different.

‘I know what I said, and I know that saying that, but from a further distance and with a different face, it would have been completely fine. I said ‘how can you not, how can you not?’

‘I think the most expensive face, I’m not sure in the world, but at least here. I think it’s a lot of money but I heard it will be invested for something good, and that’s fine.’
