Ex-Chelsea youth shines again as Bayern Munich see off Bundesliga rival
Jamal Musiala on song again for Bayern
Julian Nagelsmann returned to Saxony today at the helm of Bavarian giants Bayern Munich and duly delivered a three-point haul on Die Bayern’s travels as the Rekordmeister ran out 4-1 winners at Red Bull Arena, with Jamal Musiala once again showing age is but a number after his influential substitute performance.

After coming on at half-time for fellow German international Serge Gnabry, it only took two minutes for the 18-year-old phenom to double Bayern’s lead before assisting Leroy Sané seven minutes later, putting the Bavarian juggernaut’s 3-0 up inside 55-minutes.
Musiala has already started the season brightly under Nagelsmann after a breakout 2020-21 campaign last term that saw him break into the Bayern first-team under former boss Hansi Flick, making a combined 37-appearances (26 in Bundesliga) while adding 6-goals to his name. The Stuttgart-born wunderkind now has 2-goals and 2-assists in four Bundesliga appearances this season, and though at current he remains behind the likes of Gnabry, Sané, Kingsley Coman, and Thomas Müller, his rapid progression is sure to cement his place as a superb long-term option at the Allianz Arena.
His rapid rise saw him eventually work his way into the national team set up as well, first under Joachim Löw and now continuing under his former Bayern headmaster, with Musiala featuring in all three of Germany’s recent World Cup qualifying wins.
Chelsea miss out on another talent in youth product exodus
The rise of Jamal Musiala at Bayern Munich can trace its roots back to Premier League giants Chelsea and their vaunted Cobham academy set up. Musiala spent eight years at Chelsea before moving to Bayern in 2019 to complete his education, while almost immediately coming into the collective consciousness in Bavaria as a young player with immense potential.
And Bayern has not been the only club to benefit from the Blues’ penchant of stockpiling young players as most are eventually moved on for profit in what has been a successful model for the Stamford Bridge outfit.
Just this past summer window, Chelsea parted ways with the likes of Marc Guehi, Fikayo Tomori, Armando Broja (loan), Valentino Livramento, Lewis Bate, and Dynel Simeu just some of the players who have either left the club fully or targeted loans for guaranteed minutes at other clubs in the wake of Chelsea’s spending habits.
It would be hard for the Blues to say their system does not work considering the club policy of regularly spending to improve the team, while other academy products break into the first-team set up to supplement transfer activities, but losing out on a player of Musiala’s limitless potential could be the one that got away. Bayern certainly will not be complaining.
