Everything open, closed for President’s Day in San Antonio

President’s Day is set for Monday, February 20, and a number of San Antonio city services and businesses will be closed in observance of the holiday. Some of the usual suspects are closed, but others, like some city utilities, will remain open for regular business hours.

It is officially known as Washington’s Birthday, the National Archives said, and “contrary to popular belief, neither Congress nor the President has ever stipulated that the name of the holiday observed as Washington’s Birthday be changed to ‘President’s Day.'”

The federal holiday was established in 1879 to celebrate George Washington’s birthday, which was February 22, 1731. It was moved to be officially celebrated on the third Monday of February thanks to the 1968 Monday Holiday Law, which aimed to “provide uniform annual observances of certain legal public holidays on Mondays” in an effort to “bring substantial benefits to both the spiritual and economic life of the Nation.”
