Everton lead the race to sign Lille centre back Gabriel Magalhaes after holding further talks

Everton have held further talks over a deal for Lille centre back Gabriel Magalhaes as they emerge as favourites to conclude his £28million transfer.

The 22-year old Brazilian is also coveted by Leicester City, Wolves and AC Milan as cash-strapped Lille look to cash in and put a deal in place before the summer window opens.

A left sided centre back, Magalhaes has confirmed he is aware of interest from England but publicly has maintained a diplomatic stance, saying he wants to finish the season with Lille before making his choice.

Everton firmed up their interest over a month ago with Carlo Ancelotti proving a major attraction for Magalhaes and he is now expected to opt for a move to Goodison.

Director of Football Marcel Brand is reportedly a keen admirer of the defender, but the club may have to hold off on making a decision with the state of the transfer market remaining unclear.

The club will also have to make decisions over the futures of Jonjoe Kenny, who is spending the season on loan with Schalke, and Djibril Sidibe.
