Everton captain Seamus Coleman was carried off on a stretcher just before half time in his side’s clash against relegation rivals Leicester.

The 34-year-old was challenged by Boubakary Soumare, with the Leicester player getting a yellow card.

As he was taken off on the stretcher Coleman was still attempting to gee up the Everton supporters.

Everton manager Sean Dyche admitted that the injury ‘could be serious’.

Speaking after the game, Dyche said: ‘It’s really unfortunate. We’re waiting on news, it could be serious, a knee injury. I thought he was terrific.’

Carragher on Coleman: ‘It’s a blow for him. Fingers crossed it’s not too serious but it didn’t look great. It could be a real problem for Everton this season because I felt until he went off the pitch he was the best player on the pitch and the difference he’s made to Everton, not just his leadership, people talk about his leadership but his actual energy up and down that right hand side providing energy and an attacking outlet for Everton that hasn’t been there the last few weeks. Considering what he’s done for that football club over the 10-12 years he’s been there. One of the best signings probably in Everton’s history. There’s no doubt they’re going to miss him hugely.’

Speaking on BBC Radio Five Live, former Manchester City player Michael Brown expressed concern that Coleman may have suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Brown said: ‘It doesn’t look good [for Coleman]. Soumare just ran into the side of his shin and it could be an ACL injury.’

Coleman was replaced by Nathan Patterson in the fifth minute of stoppage time at the end of the first half.

The news regarding Coleman will be of concern to Everton as they look to avoid relegation.

Following the game against Leicester, Everton have four more games remaining this season – against Brighton, Manchester City, Wolves and Bournemouth.

Coleman has been at Everton since 2009 and has made over 400 appearances for the club.
