Ettore Messina and Ime Udoka both interviewed for Toronto Raptors

Spurs assistants considered for head coaching position

Spurs assistant coaches continue to interview as positions become available throughout the NBA. The Toronto Raptors head coaching position has remained vacant since they parted ways after seven seasons with Dwayne Casey. Casey was fired on May 11th after the Raptors were eliminated from the 2018 playoffs in a four game sweep by the Cleveland Cavaliers. He was also the recipient of the NBCA’s Coach of the Year honors.

Both Ettore Messina and Ime Udoka interviewed for the Raptors. Messina met with Toronto on Thursday, followed by Udoka on Friday. Messina has yet to be a head coach in the NBA and has four EuroLeague Championships to his resume, but is primed to take the helm at any time. He has been with the Spurs since 2014. He most recently stepped in for Gregg Popovich as head coach during the final three games of the first round of the postseason againt the Golden State Warriors. Udoka has served as assistant coach with the Spurs since 2012.

The silver lining is only one of them can be offered the job, so the Spurs hold off losing two of their valued coaches simultaneously.

That said, we wish both men good luck as they are highly qualified to be head coaches in the NBA.
