ESPN: A “Sleeper” That Makes Sense For Raiders Is Cameron Sutton

The Las Vegas Raiders desperately need to upgrade their cornerback group, that much we do know. However, what we don’t know is how they’ll go about it. There could be some game-changing prospects available next month during the NFL Draft. Still, maybe general manager Dave Ziegler goes after someone who can come in and quickly improve the unit. We’re referring to Cameron Sutton, who, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, should be a “sleeper” free agent for Raiders fans to keep an eye on.

It’s no secret that the Raiders’ defensive backfield is in need of a facelift. Sure, there are some bright spots, such as Nate Hobbs, but even he looked human after a hand injury altered his season. Bringing in Sutton gives Patrick Graham some flexibility in terms of the lineup he can trot out. Let’s say the Raiders retain Rock Ya-Sin. You can move Hobbs back to the nickel slot, and Sutton can handle duties opposite Ya-Sin. Naturally, it should be noted that many believe Sutton is more of a slot corner playing out of position. If that’s the case, he’s still an interchangeable part worth the investment.

The next question then becomes a financial one.

Sutton is coming off one of, if not his best season statistically with the Pittsburgh Steelers. So, it’s no surprise he might command serious money. How serious? Well, how about north of $10 million per year? Steelers beat writers are in agreement that will be the market value for Sutton this offseason.

Sutton’s coverage abilities are good, but are they “elite?” That depends on what you consider that to be. His Pro Football Focus coverage has been in the 70–74 range over the last three seasons. Be that as it may, it’s better than what the Raiders have sent out there in recent memory.

Everyone knows Ziegler will invest serious coin into his defense when you consider he has to replace more than half of the players that made up his depth chart in 2022. Cameron Sutton is certainly a name for Raiders fans to keep an eye on. That’s especially true if the Steelers feel they can afford not to pay him that much.
