Determining the face of the Milwaukee Bucks
I know, I know, just call Giannis Antetokounmpo the face of the Milwaukee Bucks and move on. He is only the third NBA player after fellow Bucks leader Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and superstar LeBron James to win back-to-back NBA MVPs before turning 26. He’s also the third NBA player behind Michael Jordon and Hakeem Olajuwon to win both the MVP and the Defensive Player of the Year in the same season. On top of that, he just led the Bucks to the first NBA title in forty years. Seems like a shoe-in.
Except for John McGlocklin.
Not Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (I know, he’s been slighted twice and he’s one of the all-time greats). Not Sidney Moncrief. Not Bob Dandridge. Not Junior Bridgeman (who should be the face of something, that man made a fortune after the NBA). Not Brian Winters. The Bucks have not retired the jersey of a player who has contributed in over 30 years. Moncrief played for Milwaukee until 1990, and that’s the most recent honoree of the Bucks. Which should even more solidify that the Greek Freaks is the face. Or at the very least, his to lose.
Except for John McGlocklin.
McGlockin has been with the Milwaukee Bucks franchise in some form or fashion every single year since they joined the NBA in 1968. He played the first eight of the Milwaukee Bucks seasons, winning that storied 1971 Championship. He retired in 1976 the final member of the inaugural team. He then moved into broadcasting where he has called Bucks games for 45 years.
His career with Milwaukee touches seven different decades. Being associated with the Bucks since day one has led to the nickname “Mr. Buck” by Bucks fans.
If you are a casual watcher of the Milwaukee Bucks, then McGlocklin may not cross your horizon. But if you are a Bucks fan through and through, John McGlocklin is without a doubt your franchise face. His face has been in more broadcasts than anyone else associated with the Bucks. He is your certainty, your rock, your beacon through the years.
