Derek Carr wants to play until he’s 45

Age is just a number to Tom Brady, and apparently Derek Carr feels the same way.

Brady, at 43 years of age, led the Bucs to a Super Bowl win earlier in the year, and became the oldest quarterback to ever accomplish that feat. Carr, on the other hand, has yet to win a playoff game, but he hopes to play in the NFL for just as long.

Carr is 30 years old, and he enters the 2021 season as the Raiders starting quarterback, despite trade rumors having been swirling over the past year or two. He did put together a strong campaign last season, statistically speaking, and took more chances downfield with vertical passes, which he had been criticized for avoiding throughout the majority of his career.

He’s looking to build on the momentum from last season, and continue to improve over the course of his career, which he appears to believe will be quite long. In fact, he recently said he can play another 15 years, when he’s 45.

“I feel like I can play another 15 years, without a doubt,” Carr said, via ESPN.com. “Nothing’s hurting. It’s the middle of camp, and I feel great. I feel strong, I feel fast, I feel explosive. And I think it’s just the way we train now.”

“I feel like I’m 20,” Carr said. “I honestly believe this — that our generation, the way we can take care of our bodies with football, I think 30 is the new 20. . . . That comes from science, and that comes with more understanding.”

Carr may be getting ahead of himself a bit here. A better goal might be to actually win a playoff game.
