Daniel Levy writes message to Tottenham fans ahead of final home game of season

Tottenham Hotspur chief Daniel Levy has opened up on the ‘difficult and uncertain’ season the club have endured, before vowing to bounce back next season.

Spurs have fallen flat of expectations this season, with long-serving manager Mauricio Pochettino making way for Jose Mourinho. The club are in seventh position with two games remaining.

The north London club play their final home game of the season on Sunday afternoon as they host Leicester City, with a win seeing them leapfrog Wolves into sixth place before their game against Crystal Palace on Monday.

And in the final matchday programme of the season, which has been made freely available for supporters, Levy shared his thoughts on what has been a turbulent campaign both on and off the pitch.

‘I’m not sure any of us could have foreseen just how difficult and uncertain this season would end up being both on and off the pitch,’ he said.

‘We have had bumps in the road this season on the pitch – as have many other top clubs at different times – it was our turn this season.’

Levy added that he has full faith that Mourinho can guide the club back up the league table with a summer rebuild expected.

‘We have certainly not seen the performances and results we all wanted at times and I know Jose and his coaches will be working with us in the coming months to ensure we hit the ground running for the start of next season.

‘One thing you can be assured of is the continuing ambition of everyone at this club for success on the pitch. Right now, we shall be playing until the last minute of this season to achieve the best possible finish and hopefully a European spot.’

The club have also had to contend with off-the-field matters this season, with the coronavirus crisis sending shockwaves through football.

Spurs had decided to use the government’s furlough scheme for some non-playing staff, announcing that 550 employees would take a 20 per cent pay cut in a bid to ‘protect jobs’.

However, the club soon reversed that decision after coming in for criticism from supporters.

‘Football took a backseat as we supported those most in need,’ Levy added. ‘It has been testament to human nature and spirit that everyone has adapted and persevered and the importance of community, always in our club’s DNA, came to the fore.
