Barcelona return for former academy graduate

Dani Olmo has long been one of the most sought-after talents in Europe ever since breaking into the Dinamo Zagreb first-team in 2014-15. After 5-years at the Stadion Maksimir, Olmo secured a move to RB Leipzig while being highlighted as a key piece of the puzzle under Julian Nagelsmann. But his time under the German tactician was short who now has taken up the touchline at Bayern Munich, while clubmates Dayot Upamecano and Marcel Sabitzer have joined him on Säbener Straße, and it won’t be long before Olmo also leaves Saxony for a return to Barcelona.

As reported by Mundo Deportivo’s Ferran Martínez, the former Barcelona youth came to contractual terms late in the transfer window this summer with a desire to return to the club which he still greatly admires and feels his identity is suited. Club president Joan Laporta has the goal of returning Barcelona to a status it once held under Pep Guardiola and views Olmo as one of the ideal central pieces of that process.

Though a move was not agreed upon between both clubs this summer given Leipzig’s valuation of the player, Barcelona is adamant that they plan on bringing Olmo back to Catalonia during the January transfer window rather than next summer. Any return would require a substantial wage cut for Olmo given Barça’s financial situation, but the player’s willingness to return has apparently superseded any financial needs.

Olmo deal would guarantee a long-term midfield trio at the Camp Nou

Gone are the days where Barcelona supporters could sit back, relax, and enjoy the show in midfield courtesy of the Xavi-Andres Iniesta-Sergio Busquets triumvirate. Though Busquets persists at the Camp Nou, a return to recent glory years will require an overhaul which will certainly mean eventually moving away from the iconic midfielder sooner rather than later.

Barça already has two exceptional younger talents at the club that target the long-term approach in Dutch international Frenkie de Jong, and young Spanish sensation Pedri, who set the world alight this summer during his performances at Euro2020 despite his age.

A completed deal for Olmo would see a midfield trio that would aid in defining a fresh cycle at Barcelona, one that would hopefully firmly place them atop the Spanish footballing pyramid once again.
