Cristiano Ronaldo: Piers Morgan claims Man United star is EXACTLY what Arsenal need to win the title

Piers Morgan calls for Arsenal to sign Cristiano Ronaldo because he’s ‘exactly what we need’, after revealing the details of their ‘very good’ relationship that led to his Man United ‘betrayal’ interview

Piers Morgan has claimed signing Cristiano Ronaldo is ‘exactly’ what Arsenal need to beat Manchester City to the Premier League title.

The TV host has carried out an explosive tell-all interview with the Manchester United star, with the first clips being aired on Sunday night, in which Ronaldo accused the club of ‘betraying’ him and blasted manager Erik ten Hag, adding he doesn’t ‘respect’ the Dutchman.

And Morgan – a close friend of the Portuguese – urged the table-topping Gunners, five points ahead of City as the World Cup approaches, to capitalise on the situation and snap up the 37-year-old forward in January to bolster their title bid.

Morgan responded on Twitter after a TV presenter in Ireland said: ‘Presumably Piers Morgan is hoping Arsenal sign Ronaldo and play him up top in every game.’

He posted: ‘Yes, actually. He’s exactly what we need.. @Cristiano & @gabrieljesus9 would take us to the title.’ The tweet, posted at 11pm on Sunday night, has already received 15,000 likes.

Morgan has also opened up on the pair’s close personal friendship, which helped him score the hugely controversial interview on TalkTV.

He told The Sun: ‘I first interviewed Cristiano three years ago in Turin and we ended up having a four-hour dinner. Since then, we’ve become very unlikely but very good friends. We text and speak a lot, and he has always been incredibly honest with me.’

Ronaldo’s astonishing attack looks certain to end his Old Trafford career. He accused Ten Hag and United executives of trying to force him out of the club, saying of Ten Hag: ‘I don’t have respect for him because he doesn’t show respect for me.

‘Some people, they don’t want me here – not only the coach but the other two or three guys. Not only this year, but last year too. Honestly, I shouldn’t say that. But listen, I don’t care. People should listen to the truth. Yes, I feel betrayed.’

Ronaldo missed United’s last game before the World Cup through illness on Sunday, but Ten Hag will be incandescent that the 37-year-old veteran’s comments have overshadowed the 2-1 win at Fulham and Alejandro Garnacho’s injury-time goal.

The United boss thought he had settled his differences with Ronaldo after the player was dropped and fined for refusing to come on as a substitute against Tottenham last month and then leaving before the game had finished.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner was allowed back into the squad after apologising and was even made team captain at Aston Villa last week.

However, Ronaldo’s outburst makes it almost impossible for him to stay at Old Trafford beyond the January transfer window, leaving United and Ten Hag with little choice but to find him a new club.

His team-mates were said to be deeply disappointed by his comments on Sunday night and see it as way to force his departure from Old Trafford which they now believe is inevitable.

In the fiery interview, Ronaldo cited the appointment of Ralf Rangnick as interim manager last season as an example of the club’s problems.

‘I’d never even heard of him. If you’re not even a coach, how are you going to be the boss of Man United?’

And he even had a pop at former team-mate Wayne Rooney, saying: ‘I don’t know why he criticises me so badly, probably because he finished his career and I’m still playing at high level.

‘I’m not going to say I’m looking better than him, which is true!’

United last night declined to comment. The club are thought to have only became aware of the interview as they prepared to fly back from their 2-1 win over Fulham on Sunday.
