Cowboys need more urgency after failing to acquire Pro Bowl CB Jalen Ramsey
The NFL offseason moves fast. If the Cowboys don’t stop and make a blockbuster move, they will miss out.
Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Rams agreed to trade CB Jalen Ramsey to the Dolphins for a 2023 third-round pick and TE Hunter Long.
It’s a disappointment for Dallas because “a rumor was picking up steam” that it was a trade partner for the six-time Pro Bowler, according to The Athletic’s Jeff Howe.
It also showcases the organization’s lack of urgency and prominent acquisitions.
Per ESPN’s Todd Archer, Dallas’s last major free-agent signing was in 2012 when it signed CB Brandon Carr.
The Cowboys traded for Amari Cooper in 2018, but after they shipped him to Cleveland in 2022, they found no replacement. Dallas stood pat at the trade deadline and briefly flirted with former Pro Bowler Odell Beckham Jr. before deciding not to sign him.
Instead, the Cowboys prioritized developing young prospects, which didn’t pan out since they finished 18th in receiving yards and 14th in passing yards.
Perhaps Dallas owner Jerry Jones is too focused on the long term.
“I’m real hesitant to bet it all for a year,” Jones said at the 2023 Senior Bowl. “We’re seeing a couple of teams (Rams and Eagles) that have had some real success putting it all out there but paying for it later.”
However, potentially wasting a championship core evokes regret, too. The Cowboys have won 24 regular-season games over the past two seasons, tied for second-most in the league. According to Oddschecker, they have the seventh-best Super Bowl odds.
Whether it’s signing LB Bobby Wagner or trading for WR DeAndre Hopkins, Jones and the front office should swing big to avoid missing another opportunity.
