Cowboys’ Dak Prescott seems to defend former OC Kellen Moore

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott has seemingly come to the defense of former offensive coordinator Kellen Moore. 

Per Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News (h/t Pro Football Talk), Prescott was asked during an event on Tuesday if he “needed” to hear a new voice following the 2022 season. 

“Kellen’s voice was great. [Quarterbacks coach Doug] Nussmeier’s voice was amazing,” Prescott responded. 

Under Moore and head coach Mike McCarthy, Prescott and the Cowboys won just a single playoff game across three contests over the past two years. Dallas “mutually agreed” to part ways with Moore in January, and it was later learned that McCarthy will call offensive plays next season.

“It’s not like I haven’t been coached by Mike,” Prescott explained. “He’s always coached me. That’s not going to be new.”

Prescott missed time last fall with a thumb injury and, according to ESPN stats, finished the regular season tied with Davis Mills of the Houston Texans for the most interceptions in the league. Prescott tossed his 15 picks in just 12 games but ranked 12th overall among qualified players with a 57.9 adjusted QBR. He also tallied 23 regular-season passing touchdowns. 

The 29-year-old may soon put pen to paper on a contract extension more so to free up some salary-cap space than to ensure Dallas doesn’t go in a different direction at the position as soon as next winter. Prescott sounded optimistic he can reclaim his best form with McCarthy serving as his play-caller. 

“I’m a guy that’s excited for what’s next,” Prescott said. “I know Mike’s history in calling the plays has had a lot of success so I’m excited for that. I know he’s excited to get back into it. It’s a change, but it’s going to be good.”

As for Moore, he’ll be looking to prove something to McCarthy and the Cowboys now that he’s an OC with the Los Angeles Chargers.
