Cowboys’ CeeDee Lamb on Dak Prescott: ‘It’s more like playing with a friend rather than just a quarterback’

Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones didn’t hide his dissatisfaction with wide receiver Amari Cooper this past winter and then shipped Cooper to the Cleveland Browns in March. After Jones didn’t acquire a top-tier replacement via free agency or a trade, he unofficially anointed CeeDee Lamb as his new WR1 when he said in May that he sees Lamb as an “upgrade” over Cooper.

All of that occurred before Jones and company learned that receiver James Washington went down with a Jones fracture in his foot earlier this month that will keep him sidelined for roughly six-to-10 weeks, per Rob Phillips of the Cowboys’ website.

The Cowboys will need the connection between Lamb and quarterback Dak Prescott to be at its absolute best starting with the Week 1 matchup versus the Tampa Bay Buccaneers if they are to meet the high expectations many have for them. According to Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk, Lamb spoke with Dallas sports radio station 105.3 The Fan on Friday about the chemistry he’s developed with Prescott.

“It’s for sure a lot better than I can even ask for, honestly,” Lamb explained. “It’s more like playing with a friend rather than just a quarterback out there. This offseason has been real big for the both of us. It’s kind of, priority one for the both of us to kind of get together on and off the field. Regardless of the situation, whether we’re just kicking [it] and watching movies or just watching games, however it goes. But we got to understand that we got each other right now and all I need is him, and vice versa. I just want to be there for him whenever he needs me and just kind of get on the same page, always. I feel like in order for us to get to where we want to go, we got to make this work.”

As mentioned by ESPN stats, Lamb finished last regular season with team highs of 79 receptions, 120 targets, and 1,102 receiving yards. He also contributed six touchdown catches but theoretically should see more red-zone opportunities this fall.
