Commanders sign former Eagles, 49ers LB Nathan Gerry

The Washington Commanders added depth to their linebacker position, signing veteran Nathan Gerry, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Gerry, 27, played four seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles. A fifth-round draft pick out of Nebraska, Gerry was part of the Eagles’ Super Bowl LII championship team as a rookie.

He has appeared in 46 games, including 22 starts. His best season was in 2019 when he made 12 starts, recording 78 tackles, two interceptions, including a pick-six and one fumble recovery.

He started seven games in 2020 before suffering a season-ending ankle injury. Unfortunately, the injury occurred during a contract year.

Gerry signed a one-year deal with the 49ers in 2021. However, he was waived during final cuts. The 49ers signed him to their practice squad, where he spent the season.

Gerry comes into Commanders training camp as Washington looks for depth at linebacker. Cole Holcomb and Jamin Davis are cemented as the starters. Khaleke Hudson and David Mayo appear penciled in as the next tier of linebackers.

Undrafted rookie Drew White suffered a torn ACL in practice last week. Another undrafted rookie Tre Walker briefly stepped away from football before returning to the team on Saturday.

With so many young linebackers, Washington needed to add a veteran presence. While other more notable names exist, the Commanders turn to Gerry.
