Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes asked Tom Brady for advice ahead of AFC Championship

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is about to play in his fifth consecutive AFC Championship Game but nevertheless needed some advice from a living legend this week.

As shared by Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk, Mahomes told reporters Thursday he’s spoken with Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady ahead of this Sunday’s AFC Championship Game between the Chiefs and Cincinnati Bengals held at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.

“I talked to Tom a little bit, I have a good relationship with him now and he gives me a lot of advice,” Mahomes explained. “Why would you not want to learn from the G.O.A.T.? Any time anybody like that wants to give me advice, I’ll take it in. It’s cool to see the guys you’ve watched growing up, your whole life, be able to talk to you.”

Mahomes and the Chiefs fell to Brady and the “we’re still here” New England Patriots in the AFC Championship played on Jan. 20, 2019. In February 2021, Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers thrashed Mahomes and the Chiefs 31–9 in Super Bowl LV. Brady hasn’t since returned to a conference championship contest, while Mahomes’ Chiefs lost to none other than the Bengals in last year’s AFC title fixture.

Mahomes’ past performances in such matchups aren’t all that’s on his mind heading into this weekend. He suffered a high ankle sprain in this past Saturday’s 27-20 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars but indicated on Thursday that setback has improved since he last faced a live defense.

“I thought I had a good day yesterday,” Mahomes remarked about practicing, per Adam Teicher of ESPN. “Overall probably better than I expected being able to go out there and throw the football and get in the work I needed to get in.”

Mahomes added he’s hoping “adrenaline takes over” and allows him to use his legs to scramble and keep plays alive as he’s done throughout what’s quickly become a Hall-of-Fame-worthy career.
