Chelsea tie Tino Anjorin down to a new five-year deal after 18-year-old broke into first team

Tino Anjorin has signed a new five-year contract at Chelsea after making his first team debut for the club during the 2019-20 campaign.

The 18-year-old has made two appearances for Frank Lampard’s side this term, coming on as a substitute in the League Cup win against Grimsby Town and the Premier League home victory over Everton.

The forward was top goalscorer for the Blues development squad in the Premier League 2 campaign and netted two goals in three EFL Trophy matches for the Under-23s.

‘It’s a brilliant feeling,’ Anjorin told Chelsea’s official website after agreeing a new deal. ‘I’ve been at the club since I was six years old so to get to this stage and then be offered another five-year contract on top of that is amazing.

‘I had no hesitation but to take it straight away because to play for the club I always dreamed of playing for is really special for me.

Anjorin has joined a plethora of Chelsea academy players to be given first-team opportunities by Lampard and previously won the FA Youth Cup under assistant Jody Morris in 2018.

The England Under-19 star believes both Lampard and Morris have aided his development alongside Joe Edwards and Ed Brand, and Anjorin says the standard of coaching at the club’s Cobham training ground influenced his decision to sign a new deal.

‘It’s been a really crucial season for young players here,’ Anjorin added. ‘Frank, Jody Morris and Joe Edwards have taken us on board and really committed themselves to bringing young players through.

‘It’s been really important to have those familiar faces around,’ he said of the former Academy coaches who are now working alongside Lampard. ‘It’s easy to talk to people and be around the first team building more because you’re welcomed in.

‘Hopefully I can try to carry on being a part of that as long as I keep working hard and impressing the coaches.

Anjorin came on for the final 19 minutes of the 4-0 win over Everton in March and admits he was amazed by the positive reaction of the Stamford Bridge faithful.

‘I’ll never forget the fans singing my name because it just felt so amazing. I was on the pitch playing and then I just heard them chanting “Tino, Tino, Tino”. It was unbelievable to hear that.’
