Chelsea have extended Billy Gilmour‘s contract until 2024 after exercising an option to prolong the midfielder’s stay at Stamford Bridge by a further year.

Gilmour spent last season on loan at Norwich City and will be hoping to force his way into Blues boss Thomas Tuchel’s plans ahead of the new campaign.

The 22-year-old’s deal at Chelsea had been due to expire in June 2023 after he signed for £500,000 from Rangers when he was 16.

Gilmour has made 22 first-team appearances for Chelsea, most of which came during Frank Lampard’s spell as manager.

He has started only three games under Tuchel but was a member of the squad which won the Champions League in 2021.

The Scottish international, capped 14 times by his country, may find it tough to break into Tuchel’s side given the level of competition in midfield.

N’Golo Kante, Jorginho, Mateo Kovacic, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Ross Barkley and Conor Gallagher – who has returned to Stamford Bridge after a successful spell at Crystal Palace – will all be vying for a spot in Tuchel’s team.

Gilmour featured in 28 matches for Norwich last term, including 24 in the Premier League as the Canaries were relegated back to the Championship.

He was named man of the match against England at Euro 2020 and started Scotland’s World Cup play-off semi-final defeat to Ukraine.

Gilmour has been linked with a move to Everton this summer but is believed to be highly rated by Tuchel and his coaching staff.

Chelsea are able to extend contracts, as well as buy and sell players, after sanctions placed on the club were lifted following Todd Boehly’s £4.25billion takeover.
