Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta insists all players have a clean slate under Thomas Tuchel

Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta has stated every player in the Chelsea squad will be given a chance under new boss Thomas Tuchel.

Defenders Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso rewarded the German’s faith in them by scoring a goal each in a comfortable 2-0 win against Burnley on Sunday afternoon.

The Spaniard had generally been behind Reece James in the pecking order this season under Frank Lampard, while Alonso made his first Premier League appearance since September and marked it with a fine finish to seal the game.

And skipper Azpilicueta insisted all players, including those frozen out by previous boss Lampard, would be given a clean slate by Tuchel.

He told BT Sport post-match: ‘Yeah, he has shown the quality in the box. He’s scored lots of important goals so today he was back in the team.

‘I am pleased with his performance, with his goal. We know what he can give the team in his position so now we have to be working.

‘Everybody in the squad is important, everyone has started from zero with the new manager and we have to keep the competition.

‘It’s healthy and it gives everybody the opportunity to give their maximum to get into the team.’

Antonio Rudiger, Jorginho and Callum Hudson-Odoi have played in both of Tuchel’s two matches in charge so far after being out of favour under Lampard, and the former Paris Saint-Germain boss could afford opportunities to others.

However, midfielder Billy Gilmour has been left out of both matchday squads despite his manager’s praise and wants to leave on loan to get more first-team football
