Chelsea boss Lampard wants ‘level playing field’ for stadiums with London set to go into Tier 3

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has demanded a ‘level playing field’ for fans attending matches across the country with London on the brink of entering Tier 3 in the Government’s coronavirus restrictions.

The Blues have been able to welcome a small section of supporters back to Stamford Bridge in the last couple of weeks thanks to London enjoying Tier 2 status, which means that 2,000 are permitted for outdoor events and 1,000 for indoor.

Other areas such as Manchester remain in Tier 3 – meaning no spectators are allowed in attendance, and there have been complaints from those areas that they have no been able to enjoy the same privilege.

But with rising coronavirus rates in the capital, it is increasingly likely that it will be moved to the strictest tier – which will mean London clubs will lose the right to let in 2,000 fans, and Lampard believes it should be the same for all clubs in the UK.

‘If it comes in it will be [a blow],’ the Chelsea boss said ahead of their trip to Wolves. ‘I’m slightly disappointed because it should be a level playing field for fans across the country. I’m not telling the government what to do but we can control 2,000 fans in a stadium.

‘I would like to think we could do something to get 2,000 fans in. That said, it is above my station.’
