Charlotte Triumphantly Trudges Through Snow to Buy Condoms so Daughter Lily Can Lose Her Virginity on ‘And Just Like That’

And Just Like That Season 2 Episode 6 “Bomb Cyclone” might have the most triumphant Charlotte York Goldenblatt (Kristin Davis) moment in the history of the Sex and the City franchise and that’s not an understatement.

**Spoilers for And Just Like That… Season 2 Episode 6 “Bomb Cyclone,” which is now streaming on Max**

The most maternal member of the O.G. SATC clique went above and beyond for eldest child Lily (Cathy Ang) this week, braving a blizzard to bring her kid condoms so she could lose her virginity to boyfriend Blake. Charlotte’s whole reaction to Lily’s major milestone was so beautifully in tune with the values her character has had since we met her twenty-five years ago. Charlotte York Goldenblatt is nothing if not classy, sex positive, and nurturing. Her heroic schlep through the snow on the Max show epitomized all those qualities beautifully and hilariously — and in true classic SATC fashion.

And Just Like That… Season 2 Episode 6 “Bomb Cyclone” opens with Lily dropping a major bombshell on her mom Charlotte, dad Harry (Evan Handler), and family friend Anthony (Mario Cantone): she is planning on losing her virginity. Only Charlotte thinks to follow up, which is an extremely Charlotte thing to do. She invites herself into Lily’s room, where the older child is in her full on “emo piano girl” glory.

The conversation that follows is understandably awkward, but perhaps not for the reasons one might expect. Usually these conversations are framed as comic because parents can’t seem to find the vocabulary to explicitly and positively talk about sex with their kids. Think Violet Bridgerton (Ruth Gemmell) “explaining” what happens on a wedding night to newlywed daughter Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor) in Bridgerton Season 1. It was all roundabout metaphors about flowers and puppies, with nary an actual tidbit of real information.

Charlotte doesn’t have that problem. “I’ve just always tried to be sex positive with you two,” Charlotte tells Lily before ensuring they have protection. After Lily insists she and Blake are on it — and have heard the safe sex spiel since fifth grade — Charlotte goes an extra awkward, but adorable step. She scoots closer to her daughter and says, “Lily, I just really want you to focus on your pleasure just as much as his pleasure.” Naturally her daughter is creeped out and the conversation comes to a close.

That’s that until a bomb cyclone strikes New York City. Because Blake’s parents are stranded in Connecticut, Lily declares to her pajama-ed parents that it’s the perfect day to lose her virginity. Charlotte doesn’t know how to react and Lily makes fun of her drawing closer, insisting they’re not going to hug. Well…what does Lily know?

Later, Lily frantically calls Charlotte as there is an issue. Neither teen thought to actually buy condoms, assuming the other one was on top of it. After Lily explains that Blake is nervous the pharmacy closest to them will rat them out to his mom, she begs her mom to bring condoms to them. Charlotte understandably says no until Lily adds that it’s fine. Blake googled how to pull out.

What follows is an odyssey of love. Charlotte, clad in a pink coat with a Burbury scarf and arming a Chanel purse, trudges through the snowy streets of the Upper East Side. After a few disappointments, she finally manages a miracle. She arrives at Blake’s family’s fancy townhouse with a Trojan Pleasure Pack, aka way more than enough protection for the teens.

Always a mom — well, always a “Charlotte,” — Charlotte advises her daughter on the selections. “There is classic, thin, ribbed… I would avoid using the warming one because you get a rash really easily down there.”

Instead of acting too cool for her mom, Lily is eternally grateful. So much so that, yes, she hugs her mom before closing the door to lose her virginity. The last shot of this storyline is a camera triumphantly pulling away from Charlotte looking up at the townhouse’s bedroom floor, a nervous but placid smile upon her face.

I obviously really loved this storyline for Charlotte. Not only did it give the great Kristin Davis so many wonderfully fraught moments to play, but it also felt totally in tune with everything we’ve known about Charlotte’s character since day one. The stereotype about Charlotte has always been that she’s the prude of the group, thanks to her penchant for pearls and Ralph Lauren Polo. But Charlotte was as sexually adventurous as any of the other Sex and the City characters. The difference between her and Samantha (Kim Cattrall) was that Samantha was only having sex to have sex. Charlotte saw sex as a key part of the journey to attaining true love.

If you’re shocked that the seemingly straight-laced Charlotte would get her teen daughter condoms, you clearly haven’t noticed how much the character has always loved and prioritized sex. Her first marriage to Trey (Kyle MacLachlan) fell apart because of intimacy and fertility issues while her second marriage to Harry blossomed because of their sexual chemistry. Heck, two weeks ago, Charlotte was kvetching over Harry’s “dust-balls” because she liked semen so much.

But Charlotte’s also always been the mother of the group, determined to care for each of her friends through thoughtful gifts and acts of service. Going out into a blizzard to buy Lily condoms so she can safely lose her virginity felt like Charlotte being her truest, most Charlotte self. She would never slut-shame her daughter, but more importantly, she would never let Lily down.

Charlotte’s storyline in this week’s And Just Like That... is an instantly iconic moment for the already iconic TV character.
