“Never forget.”
Those words are what many people across the United States pledged to after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.
People have continued the tradition of honoring nearly 3,000 victims who died and people whose lives were forever changed by 9/11 with memorials, services and events.
Here’s a list of some events and memorials that pay honor to 9/11:
- 9/11 Memorial near JBSA-Lackland: San Antonio’s 9/11 Memorial near Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland was built two years after the attacks, according to the San Antonio Report. It spans 10,000 feet and includes a Wall of Freedom, a steel pillar and two sloping walls. The online newspaper reported that it was paid for by private donations and members of the New Life Congregation, which is nearby. The memorial is located just east of the Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center.
- Freedom Walk at Canyon Lake Dam: The Canyon Lake Professional Firefighters Association will host the Freedom Walk starting with the firefighter walk at 9 a.m., followed by the “Breakfast and a Band” event at the Dam Red Barn at 10 a.m. on Sept. 11.
- Judson High School: The school will hold a remembrance ceremony at 8 a.m. on Sept. 11, followed by a bleacher climb at D.W. Rutledge Stadium, 900 S. Seguin Road in Converse.
- San Antonio College: The college and the First Responders Academy will host Patriot Day at 9 a.m. on Sept. 11 at the SAC mall outside the Chance Academic Center. SAC is located at 1819 N Main Ave.
- SAISD: The district will honor the victims with memorial ceremonies at various campuses, each featuring JROTC cadets.
- St. Mary’s University: The university will host a 9/11 Commemoration, with a Mass at 12:15 p.m. and a prayer service at 3 p.m. at the Barrett Memorial Bell Tower on Sept. 11. St. Mary’s University is located at 1 Camino Santa Maria.
- Travis Manion Foundation: The 9/11 Heroes Run will start at 7 a.m. on Sept. 12 at McAllister Park. The run helps bring the community together to honor the victims. Registration and prices can be found here.
- Wagner High School: Judson ISD will honor the life and sacrifice of LTC Karen Wagner with a memorial ceremony at 9 a.m. on Sept. 11.
