The power is out, and now the water is, too for some residents who live in neighborhoods west of Austin. Many may have to take extra steps in consuming or cooking with tap water in the days or hours ahead.

After issuing a water conservation notice following customers reporting outages and pressure dipping below 20 psi, Travis County Water District 10 residents are being told to boil and cool water for consumption, cooking, and making ice.

The area includes West Lake Hills, Westwood, and a number of other communities directly to the west of Austin.

The notice comes as Austin Energy is working to restore power to two pumps: McConnel Pump Station and Wakefield Pump Station. Travis County officials are also asking residents of the district to continue to conserve water.

Austin Water issued a notice in the face of rumors that it had plants that were or were going to be going offline.

“Austin Water’s treatment plants are currently operating at normal levels & meeting the community’s water demands,” the utility tweeted from its official account on early Thursday afternoon, February 2.

While there have been outages, crews are working in Southwest Austin to keep the pumps operating. In the meantime, Austin Water has asked that folks consider conserving water for the time being.
