Celtic boss confirms triple injury blow after Alloa: ‘Quite significant’

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou has confirmed that the club were dealt a trio of fresh injury blows on Saturday, with one in particular looking altogether ‘significant’.

The Bhoys marked their return to cup action earlier today, making the trip to Scottish League One outfit Alloa Athletic for a 4th-round tie.

And, when all was said and done, Postecoglou’s troops, as expected, got the job done, securing a 2-1 win to set up a 5th-round meeting with Raith Rovers early next month.

Celtic’s eventual triumph at Recreation Park, however, came at a cost.

No fewer than three members of the club’s starting XI – in the form of Yosuke Ideguchi, Liel Abada and Callum McGregor – were ultimately forced to limp out of proceedings, owing to respective injury concerns.

And, speaking to the media post-match, Postecoglou went on to provide a particularly concerning update on the wellbeing of captain McGregor:

“The main thing is we got through, it wasn’t a great night for us overall.

“We played OK and probably should have put them away earlier but the disappointing thing is we’ve got a couple of significant injuries.

“I think Liel and hopefully Yosuke will be alright but Callum’s obviously quite significant so we’ll just have to wait and see.”

Old Firm absence?

Any kind of extended absence for McGregor over the coming weeks could well see the midfielder forced to sit out the latest edition of the Old Firm.

Amid a tense battle for supremacy atop the Scottish Premiership table, Celtic and Rangers are set to renew rivalries once more in less than two weeks’ time, in a crunch showdown at Celtic Park.

And, if his manager’s initial prognosis is anything to go by, then a ‘significant’ injury would likely rule McGregor out of proceedings, a potentially hefty blow to the Hoops’ chances of hunting down their Glaswegian neighbours at the division’s summit.
